Arenal has since the 1960s been used to describe that area from C'an Pastilla to the east end of the Bay of Palma. But in recent years, it has all been called the Playa de Palma with Arenal losing its identity. Strictly speaking, Arenal is only the small part of the Bay of Palma around the Arenal port area. It is that area that is more popular with the British tourists, the remainder of the Playa de Palma is more of an international destination, and in July and August it is popular with German youths, just as Magalluf is with the British youngsters.

Nowhere in the Playa de Palma area is far from the airport, and Palma city is only a short bus ride away. The golden sands of the Playa de Palma stretch for nearly 5 kilometres and there is a promenade that runs the full length of the beach. It is totally flat and ideal for people with walking difficulties, or with prams or wheelchairs. Most of the bars and restaurants are along the promenade while the night life is either on the road running parallel to the beach or in the roads leading from the beach up to it.

There is a large Water Park at the Arenal end of Playa de Palma, and in the middle of the bay is Golf Fantasia, a great 'crazy' golf and lesiure complex.
